Gems

Last Tuesday, our family went to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There are many great things at that museum, but the highlight for me on this trip was the new gem exhibit. We saw all manner of exquisite necklaces, rings, earrings, and other jewelery, including the brooch above. Some stones were cut but not set, being too large (as in egg-sized) to ever be worn. Many of the pieces were brand new, while others were centuries old. There were a few that had been part of the Russian crown jewels. Next time you're at HMNS, be sure to visit the gems.

Hi, Carol,

It was neat, and the atmosphere was good too, with the lights dim and Canon in D playing in the background.

If your family has any extra time next time you're in Houston, admission to the main exhibit halls is free after 2:00 on Tuesdays.

Really?! Thanks for telling me. We're going to be in the area for a few week in February. We'll have to see what our schedule looks like and check out the parking situation. :) Some places we have to park 6 blocks away. We don‘t like doing. :-/

I acknowledge the point of the nitpicking proofreader.

Seriously though, many of the pieces of jewelery, not the stones themselves, were created just last year by a local jeweler whose name I forget. Whoever he is can probably now retire in comfort.

Carol, if it helps in your research, the museum is on the north side of Herman Park.
