Swamp Stomp
The Swamp Stomp is an annual event here in Houston where contra dancers from all over the area gather for an afternoon and evening of food and dancing. Contra dancing is what you get when you cross English country dancing with square dancing and throw in some extra enthusiasm. It's a great kind of dancing, because anyone who can walk and who knows right and left can do it, but it's so fun that you almost never want it to stop. To the observer, contra just looks like lots of spinning and walking in circles, but when you get into it, it can feel like flying. Come join us, if you're in Houston on September 9. This is really great! We have said for years how much we missed the dancing we did in LA and this is very close, probably some of the same dances. Did you see this clip? I thought it was sweet to see the mom with a baby in a sling dancing while teaching her other girls to dance. There was one odd thing...look for the man in the skirt--long and flowing, not kilt-like. Have you seen this in your dancing adventures? I remember you told us about a guy in a skirt, but did you mean like this???
Yes, I'm afraid we meant like that! Folk and contra dancing events are great for meeting eccentric characters, that's for sure. I've only met one man who wore skirts like that, though. It sort of freaked me out, but he was a great dancer, and he was married (to a woman), so I guess, hey, whatever floats your boat, sir!

I think that guy's reasoning was this: women used to only wear skirts, but now wear skirts and pants. So why, he thought, should men only be allowed to wear pants? I think that wearing skirts could be dangerous to one's manhood.
I think you're right about it being dangerous to one's manhood. As much as I try to rationalize it...I can't. Does he like the feel of it twirling around his legs??? The light airy feeling it brings about as he dances?? At least he was dancing with a woman. But what does one say to one's wife to broach this subject? Do you say, "Honey, may I borrow one of your skirts for dance tonight? It looks like so much fun when I see you twirling around!" It does raise lots of questions...but I don't think I have the guts to go up to a man in a skirt and ask him these questions.
I have this hilarious image in my mind of the man walking out in his wife's skirt and asking, "Honey, does this make me look fat?"

I truly did not mean to hijack your post on the Swamp Stomp...it just sorta happened. I will try to refrain from such silliness in the future. Though I make no promises, lest I fail.

I realized that while skirt wearing may be dangerous to manhood, it is not necessarily fatal. I myself spent a considerable amount of my play time up to about age 6 in skirts. This is due, of course, to the overwhelming and domineering influence of my older sister. At least now I can identify with all those men of past generations who spent their first few years in frilly nightgowns.
I go now to consider how to scrape together any remnants of respectability left to my blog.

Actually, we dressed our little brothers up too. ( Do they mind I let that out? ) It's an older domineering sister thing. : D LOL
